1. The accounting identity
Assets = liabilities + equity. Growth funded by debt raises risk; growth funded by retained earnings has a different failure mode.
2. Leverage and liquidity
Debt can amplify returns and wipe out equity in a downturn. Liquidity decides who survives a credit freeze.

3. Why it matters in bears
Two companies with similar EPS can diverge violently if one is over-levered.
Same earnings, different survival
