1. Two returns stacked
Your result ≈ local asset return + currency move versus your home currency (with compounding details). Strong home currency can dampen overseas gains; weak home currency can amplify them.
2. Why FX moves
Rate differentials, growth outlooks, risk appetite, and capital flows drive currencies. Safe-haven demand can lift some currencies in stress even when local equities fall.
3. Practical global investing
Decide whether you want currency exposure. Some investors leave it unhedged as a diversifier; others hedge for cleaner equity bets. Neither is free of trade-offs.
Same Nikkei move, different USD result
If Japanese equities rise 10% in yen and the yen falls 8% versus your currency, much of the equity gain can vanish in translation. The opposite FX move can flattering your reported return.
