1. Mechanics
You borrow shares, sell them, and later buy them back to return to the lender. If the price falls, you profit; if it rises, you lose.
2. Asymmetric risk
A long stock's loss is capped at 100% without leverage. A short's loss can grow without a fixed ceiling as price rises.
