Year-End Tax Checklist for Stock Investors

Before the tax year closes, investors often review realized gains, harvest candidates, wash-sale risk, wrapper contributions, and estimated payments. Use this checklist to organize research, then open the matching StockWatch guides and country desks.

Realize what already happened

Export YTD realized gains/losses from every taxable broker. Note short-term vs long-term character. Include ESPP/RSU sales and crypto disposals if they belong on the same return.

Decide on harvesting carefully

If you have gains, review losers you are willing to sell for portfolio reasons. Check wash-sale or local anti-avoidance windows. Prefer economic substitutes over identical repurchases.

Wrappers and estimates

Use remaining contribution room in tax-advantaged accounts if that is part of your plan. If you had a large untaxed gain, revisit estimated payment deadlines so April is not a surprise.

Records

Save 1099/contract-note equivalents, donation receipts if any, and notes on lot selections. Future you will need them.

  • YTD realized gain/loss by account
  • Open lot review for harvest candidates
  • Wash-sale / repurchase calendar
  • Wrapper contribution room
  • Estimated tax calendar

Simple illustration

Educational numbers only - not your return.

In mid-December you see $20k of realized gains and a $7k unrealized loss on a position you no longer want. You check repurchase plans, sell the loser, document the substitute ETF, and confirm whether an estimated payment is due before year-end in your system.

Should I harvest? checklist
Probably not a classic harvest

If the shares sit in a tax-advantaged wrapper, year-end loss harvesting usually does not work the way taxable-brokerage guides describe. Open the accounts guide and your country desk instead.

Enter gains and a potential loss to see a rough net picture (not your tax bill).

Common mistakes

  • Harvesting on the last day without checking settlement and repurchase timing.
  • Forgetting a second brokerage account.
  • Maxing a buzzword account without checking eligibility.
  • Treating a checklist as personalized tax advice.

Guide FAQ

Short answers for discovery.

When is “year-end”?

Follow your tax year’s last day (for example 31 December or 31 March). Settlement dates can matter for trades near the boundary.

Should everyone harvest losses?

No. No gains, wrappers-only portfolios, or poor substitutes can make harvesting pointless or harmful.
